Wallpaper is so common that you may now take it for granted. You may not consider the effect it has on your room, and maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe you want your wallpaper to be subtle and simply complement the bolder choices you’ve made in your interior design. But maybe you want to make more of a statement with your wallpaper. Whatever your preference, it can be hard to choose wallpaper, so we’ve made a short guide to help you with your choice.

What rooms suit wallpapering?

Wallpaper suits a wide range of rooms, in fact, the only places you wouldn’t want wallpaper are the bathroom and kitchen. Bathrooms because they’re often damp and that can cause the paper to peal, and kitchens for the same reason plus the fact wallpaper is difficult to clean if there are splashes or spills.

Other than that, wallpaper is great in hallways, bedrooms, living rooms, and more. Wallpaper has the added benefit of making a room feel warmer and more inviting, so it’s perfect for making a cosy study or living room.

What types of wallpaper are there?

The short answer to this question is that there are tons of different types of wallpaper. Lining paper, traditional wallpaper, vinyl wallpaper, and non-woven wallpaper to name but a few.

Lining paper isn’t decorative, but instead provides a base layer before you lay your chosen wallpaper over the top, the aim being to remove imperfections in the wall.

Traditional wallpaper is affordable and easy to come by. It comes in a whole range of colours and designs. The downsides are that it fades in the sun and isn’t washable.

Vinyl wallpaper is a very popular type. It consists of a paper or fibre backing layer with a plastic upper coating. Like traditional wallpaper it comes in a whole range of colours and designs. The downside is that it doesn’t allow the wall to breathe and might exude toxic fumes.

Finally, non-woven wallpapers are a new trend in interior design. They are made out of a blend of natural and synthetic fibres, meaning they are both breathable and washable. The only downside is that they can be expensive!

What wallpaper suits your room?

After you’ve considered the above options, this question is essentially a matter of personal preference. As mentioned, wallpaper comes in a wide range of colours and patterns, so it’s really up to you. You’ll want to decide whether you want your wallpaper to be bold or subtle, and what colour or colours might suit your room. You’ll also want to consider what sort of feel you’re aiming to go for in your room. Are you wanting a cosy, homely, traditional look, or a modern look?
